The United Nations defines sustainable development as development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The goal is to take action to end poverty, protect the planet, and improve the lives and prospects of all people, everywhere. Broadly speaking, sustainable development is achieved in two ways: (I) customers and consumers begin to demand sustainable offerings and solutions, and organizations respond to these demands by focusing on developing sustainable offerings and solutions (the “y” axis in Figure 1); (II) organizations use appropriate and sustainable resources to develop sustainable offerings and solutions while using fewer resources and reducing waste (the “x” axis in Figure 1).
Quality management has emerged as a key platform for sustainable development because it helps organizations meet the needs of their customers and stakeholders while innovating, constantly improving, and use fewer resources. Although current research on sustainability focuses on the negative effects of people’s lifestyles on the climate or resources, this approach only addresses the symptoms. To resolve the underlying problems, it is necessary to analyze the system that generates these effects and their root causes. This will enable the identification of actions through systematic problem-solving activities, value-based process development, and innovative methods—pillars of quality management.

The Quality Sustainability Award (QSA) was established in 2020 to recognize how quality management philosophy, methodology, and tools have been used to achieve more sustainable development. The competition honors projects that have successfully linked quality to sustainability and whose primary objective is to promote evidence-based, results-focused, and improvement-oriented sustainability work.

The competition has the following objectives:
The Institute for Quality at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, with authorization from the IAQ, is organizing the Quality Sustainability Award throughout Latin America. This competition will recognize improvement teams that have implemented projects focused on one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly. The SDGs are the strategic framework for achieving a sustainable future for all people. They are interconnected and address the global challenges we face every day, such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, prosperity, peace, and justice.
Teams from all types of organizations that have developed improvement initiatives or projects with measurable and demonstrable results. Improvement projects must demonstrate how quality management principles have been applied to develop more sustainable solutions and offerings, while reducing waste and optimizing resource use. The project must be related to the SDGs established by the United Nations. More than one team from the same organization is permitted to participate.
Teams whose methodology focuses on solving a specific problem
or on process improvement. For example:
Here is a sample list of improvement projects:
The competition consists of three stages. In the first stage, teams submit the documentation for their improvement project to the Competition’s Technical Directorate; subsequently, an evaluator conducts a pre-qualification review of the project. In the second stage, the document is evaluated by a panel of judges. The evaluation is based on two criteria developed by the IAQ.
These criteria assess the management of the improvement projects and how they align with one of the SDGs. The third stage, called the “Final Round,” is held publicly with the finalist teams, where they present their projects to the judges. After the presentation, the winners are awarded.
Two fundamental aspects of the project are recognized as key to demonstrating the application of quality in achieving sustainability. These are outlined below:
* Includes a preliminary review to determine whether the project meets the requirements.
** Includes registration and a feedback report
The schedule varies depending on the year of the competition.
